Filk Music

Please note; this is under construction, and has just undergone a major renovation (followed by a minor riff descending into a blues number..) Links will be changing from time to time. If you want me to add your web page here, drop me an email.

The first question many people ask is "what is this filk stuff, anyhow?". Useful answers to this question take a great deal of time, as the answer seems to vary from person to person; the best answer is (imho) "Whatever you make it." It's a community; it's a family; it's friends; it's music. It's funny, sad, inspiring, commerorating, challenging, and celebrating.

Alternatively, you could just read the songs on web pages, and the newsgroup, rec.music.filk (few people still use alt.music.filk except for bawdy songs); the FAQs get posted very regularly. Best of all, go to a convention or house-party, stay up all night in a circle, and make new friends.

There are plenty of enthusiastic and talented people in the filk community. Plenty of filk-related web-sites exist; here are some of the ones I've found, as well as my own work. You can also find more using the Filkers Bardic Ring - see below.

British filkers and groups:
N'early Music Consort Phoenix Dan Bennett
Martin 'GK' Gordon-Kerr Talis Kimberley Tim and Annie Walker
Mike Whitaker Mike Richards

Other filkers and filk pages:
Tom Smith Meg Davis Ookla the Mok
Windbourne Eric Bogle Karen Rodgers
Judith and Dave Hayman Blars Blarson

Some filk convention web pages:
Conchord 13 Decadence Conthirteena
XIlophone ZonCon 98

Among the best of the filk sites are the FilKONtario site, including the Filk Hall of Fame, and the Interfilk site. Interfilk is a fan-run charity that funds filk guests to cons outside their usual area; recently, Phil Allcock from Britain was the Interfilk Guest of Honour at The Second Concerto.
Lastly, here are some music sites aren't filk, but may be of interest:
Christine Lavin Lorenna McKennitt Taylor's Traditional Tunebook
